This question seems odd but in reality very few people can answer you these questions. The word portal is misunderstood among many people in the industry and is mainly confused with the web content management systems. Most clients are looking for simple and convenient way to host and display the web content in their sites. Moreover, they might need to upload some documents and files for the site’s visitors to view and download. If the requirements don’t go beyond the web content then we use open source web content management systems such as Joomla and Drupal are the way to go.

But sometimes the client‘s requirements might exceed those of the typical scenario that we described. The client might need a robust and agile system that allows him for advance manipulation of the website content with the ability to deploy new changes in short time. Also, the client might need advance web functions, or applications, like the ones found in the big sites. Example can range from adding wikis and discussion forums to organizing large groups of users with common interest and allowing collaboration between the members of those groups. In this case, your requirements shift you to a domain known as enterprise portal solution. Such solution can be built from ground zero, which will take time and usually is costly, or you need to adopt a ready portal solution. In most cases an enterprise portal, like Liferay, will be perfect solution for your problem while allowing you to deploy new functions by either developing them or acquiring them from third parties.
